VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE -VITA  
Free Income Tax Preparation and Filing

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $60,000 or less, persons with disabilities, elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

We offer FREE tax preparation services to qualified residents in Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties earning 60k or less.

We offer 3 convenient ways to file:  
      1. In-Person (Sonora only)
      2. Drop-off in either Jackson, Sonora or Jamestown.
      3. Virtual with our local IRS certified tax preparers.

We may also be able to assist you in filing your taxes on your own. You may be surprised how easy it is. Let us help determine your situation and get your taxes filed. 

Note that some tax situati
ons may be out of our scope. We also can not process returns for the following situations:

-Married filing separately.

-Income (or loss) from rental property or Schedule K-1, and royalties.

-Filing with a FEMA claim for damaged in 2022/23.

-Filing as a Conservator or Power of Attorney on behalf of someone else.

Note that the IRS and it's affiliates may charge you a fee to e-file based on your tax situation. It costs nothing to mail a paper return once you've prepared it. IRS Free File is available to any individual or family who earned $73,000 or less in 2023.

earned income TAX CREDIT

Earn more than $1 and less than 30,950k last year? Work for an employer or work for yourself?  You may be eligible for the cash-back California Earned Income Tax Credit and the Young Child Tax Credit for children under 6.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT?

These low-cost, no-overdraft, no-surprise-fee accounts can help you claim your refund and steer you clear of expensive alternative financial services, including check cashers, payday lenders, and pawn shops that charge high fees.

What you'll need for tax preparation.

CHECKLIST

-Valid Photo ID for taxpayer and spouse.

 

-Valid Social Security Cards or ITIN #'s for taxpayer, spouse, and dependents. (Acceptable substitutes are a letter from the Social Security Administration, form SSA-1099 or Medicare card that includes the letter "A" after the SSN.

 

-Birth dates for self, spouse and dependents

.

-All income statements: W-2, 1099’s, Social Security Benefits statements, etc.

 

-Any Interest and dividend statements from banks (form 1099).

 

-A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available.

 

-Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit if there is a refund.

 

-Statement & Tax ID# from childcare provider. 

 

-Total paid for daycare (if applicable) and the daycare provider’s identifying number.

-Proof of Medical Insurance form 1095-A, 1095-B or 1095-C.

 

-Other income/expense information if applicable (e.g. Tuition Credit, Form 1098-T, Student Loan Interest form 1098-E. Tip, gambling, lottery or other income. Retirement income or payments from pensions. Self-employment income/expenses.

 

 

 

Virtual Training and

Virtual Tax Preparation is Available

Though we offer in-person training and tax preparation, volunteers can also learn, train and prepare taxes from the comfort of their own homes.

Flexible Schedule

Volunteer as much or as little as you want. A few hours a week, a few days, it's up to you.

We Now Offer Free Tax Prep through August

You can choose to help us during the busy tax season or help us out during the late Spring or Summer months.
